Fact Fluency
The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Practice Guide, Assisting Students Struggling With Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools (Gersten et al., 2009), recommends that students spend approximately ten minutes a day building fluency in basic arithmetic facts, defined here as the addition and related subtraction facts and the multiplication and related division facts. This recommendation is based on research indicating that students who lack foundational skills are at a disadvantage in subsequent mathematics learning (Gersten et al., 2005; Wallace & Gurganus, 2005).
